he
unique
mix
of
antioxidants in a natural
piece of fruit work much more
effectively when consumed
together, than when they
are taken separately in the
form of a tablet, according to
researchers at Brigham Young
University in Utah.
Antioxidants
slow
down
the ageing of cells, protect
against cancer and could help
ward off heart disease. Tory
Parker, the assistant professor
of
nutrition,
dietetics
and food science, and his
colleagues at the university
examined whether ‘phenolic
compounds’ - biochemicals
that have antioxidant and
antimicrobial qualities and
are found in oranges, worked
in synergy.
He
comments:
“There’s
something about an orange
that’s better than taking a
Vitamin C capsule, and that’s
really what we’re trying to
figure out. We think it’s
the particular mixture of
antioxidants in an orange that
makes it so good for you. “
