Coffee is a good source
of antioxidants
While fruits and vegetables
are still the richest sources
of antioxidants, it turns out
that for many office work-
ers, coffee is the main basis
of antioxidant consumption.
Black tea and bananas come
in second and third place, re-
spectively. Surprisingly, both
caffeinated and decaffein-
ated coffee provide similar
amounts of antioxidants.
Coffee increases
your metabolism
Studies show that coffee is
beneficial in terms of weight
loss. It is however a common
misconception
that
cof-
fee is an appetite suppres-
sant. But supposedly your
morning cup of coffee can
speed up your metabolism
by about 10 per cent. Meta-
bolic rates are highest dur-
ing the first three hours after
consumption. Just make sure
to skip the added sugars,
syrups and whipped top-
pings often found in coffee-
based drinks.
Coffee can improve
Short-termmemory
According
to
studies
published in ‘The Journal
of the American Medical
Association’, caffeine is a
cognitive
stimulant
that
actually boosts brain func-
tion.
Furthermore,
coffee
reduces the levels of beta
amyloid, a protein in the
brain that is responsible for
Alzheimer’s disease.

Coffee lowers the rates
of some types of can-
cer
According to WebMD (the
American provider of health
information services), coffee
drinkers are 50 per cent less
likely to get liver cancer. By
drinking two cups of coffee
per day, you’re also slashing
your risk of getting colon
cancer by 25 per cent. Some
studies have also found ties
to lower rates of breast and
skin cancer.
Coffee can reduce the
risk of developing type
2 diabetes
WebMD also asserts that cof-
fee contains chemicals that
lower the blood sugar, mak-
ing heavy coffee drinkers
half as likely to get diabetes
as light to non-coffee drink-
ers. One to three cups per day
can reduce the risk of getting
diabetes by single digits, but
people who drink six cups or
more per day can slash their
chances by up to 54 per cent.
Coffee is actually good
for your teeth
We all know that one of the
biggest downsides of drink-
ing coffee is a stained smile,
but the beverage can also
have a positive effect on the
teeth. According to a 2009
article published in the ‘Wall
Street Journal’, people who
drink coffee are less likely to
have cavities. Roasted coffee
beans produce antibacte-
rial effects that ward against
microorganisms like Strepto-
coccus,which plays a hand in
causing tooth decay.
Coffee can help pre-
vent and stop head-
aches
Did you know that caffeine is
one of the main ingredients
in migraine medication like
Excedrin Migraine? WebMD
explains that blood vessels
increase in size during a mi-
graine. However caffeine
works to decrease the size
of the blood vessels before
they can affect the nerves in
the brain. So, drinking coffee
in the early stages of a head-
ache can help to minimise
the severity later on.
