December, on the cusp of a New Year,
a time for reflection.
I contemplate what profound words of eloquence I can pen to better highlight
the numerous Al Habtoor Group successes during 2013. I am sitting in my home
in Al Barsha. This was desert when I first came to Dubai in the early 8o’s and
then I would have been writing this in my office near the Clock Tower, Deira.
That change in circumstance, location and distance is a poignant metaphor for
the huge progress that has been made in Dubai. It too has travelled a long way
in 30 years and has become a multicultural thriving economy. A place for all
to live in security and comfort. A place that rewards hard work and creativity.
A place where core family values are retained and respected. Emirati women
are represented in society at all levels, and are now an important part of the
workforce but are still highly valued for the role they also play as mothers and
matriarchs.
The journey of Dubai has been steered by the visionary leadership of HH Sheikh
Mohammed and his predecessors and has been driven by the business pioneers
of this country, and particularly by one I know well, Mr. Khalaf Al Habtoor.
The Group’s multi-national workforce is now being complimented by an increasing
number of Emiratis. Mr. Khalaf has put his full support behind this national
incentive. It is important that Emiratis join the private sector and experience the
self worth that ‘doing a good job’ brings. We all work so that we can enjoy our
lives, our families and this necessitates a salary and leisure time but pride in
what we do in the work place sets an example to all and builds a secure future
for our children. At Al Habtoor we are offering long term careers with excellent
prospects to Emiratis so they may to be part of the Al Habtoor Groups and their
Nation's continuing success story.
This year under the Chairman’s guidance we have completed the Waldorf Astoria,
announced the biggest project in the Middle East - Al Habtoor City, acquired two
new car brands-Chery and JAC Motors. The list goes on!
So, 2013 was yet another landmark year for the Group. Another year awaits with
an unlimited horizon. Who knows what it will hold for us all, but I realise one thing
has not changed ... there is still no snow on my window ledge!
