The Al Farooq
Omar Ibn Al
Khattab Mosque and Centre (AFMC)
in Dubai opened to the public in 2011.
It was a gift to the nation from our
Chairman, Khalaf Ahmad Al Habtoor.
Nearly two years on it has drawn in
the crowds, welcoming people from all
over the world, no matter what religion
or nationality. The mission of the Al
Farooq Omar Ibn Al Khattab Mosque
and Centre is to raise awareness about
Islamic civilisation, Arabic heritage and
the culture of the UAE – and to build
inter-cultural exchange.
The words ‘moderation,’ harmony’
and ‘peace‘ go hand in hand at the
mosque.
The
mosque
is
capable
of
accommodating 3,500 worshippers; it
has a fully stocked library, youth club,
lecture hall and classroom.
The design of the striking Al Farooq
Omar Ibn Al Khattab Mosque and
Centre was inspired by the famous
Blue Mosque in Istanbul, Turkey. It
has 21 domes and 124 stained-glass
windows, four pencil-shaped minarets
each scaling 65 metres. Some 60
artists from Morocco decorated the
stunning, yet simple interior. The
hand-made Islamic art took one year
to complete and the carpet was
commissioned from Germany.
The Al Farooq Omar Ibn Al Khattab
Mosque, named after Caliph Omar,
a close companion of the Prophet
Mohammad (PBUH), is an architectural
wonder that is open to all.
